CHIM. Composé organique (de formule R-SH), généralement caractérisé par une odeur fétide, analogue aux alcools mais dans lequel un atome de soufre divalent remplace l'atome d'oxygène du radical oxhydrile. Synon. thiol. Les phénols peuvent être (...) hydrogénés sous pression, en vue de les transformer en carburants. Gaz. — Le gaz obtenu (...) contient (...) de l'hydrogène sulfuré, des mercaptans (CHARTROU, Pétroles natur. et artif., 1931, p. 191).
♦Mercaptan éthylique (GRAND. 1962). Alcool éthylique dans lequel le soufre a remplacé l'oxygène, de formule C2H5 SH. On peut percevoir olfactivement 2,5 x 10—3 mg de mercaptan éthylique (GRAND. 1962).
